BJ | July 31, 2006 2:13 pm

It’s up. Get it while it’s hot.

I haven’t even watched it yet :( I have a final tonight.

Edit: Whoops. I apparently jumped to #2 in google search results for this one, and I’m not intending the uploads to be general purpose (I mainly do it to help out my dad in getting his “favorite TV show”)

If you know me in real life, then you know my e-mail. E-mail me and I’ll give you the password. If you don’t, then I’m sorry. I suggest using bittorrent and the links at finalgear.com to download.

Happy surfing.

Israel’s Track Record

BJ | 11:51 am

I don’t want to post in anger, or appear to be an anti-Israel zealot. There are answers that we need and the US has turned a blind eye to the mistakes of Israel in the past. After the recent mistake made by the Israeli military it becomes more and more difficult to understand why the US continues it’s unchecked support of Israel.

Now let me say that I’m not condoing the abolishment of the Israeli state, or even suggesting that Israel did not have the right to protect it’s borders, but their lack of precision in killing actual members of Hezbollah brings into question their true stance with relation to Lebanon. It seems that they wish to incite horror into the populace of Lebanon to scare the state into action. They fail to understand that the continued reckless aggression being shown will only solidify the middle-east againt them. They are even begnning to draw the ire of the UK and US.

I can’t criticize Israel without also pointing out that Lebanon continues its silence in taking responsibility for its borders and people. I mentioned in a previous comment that the escalation of these conflicts, together with the recent sparring in trade negotiations, has the potential to start some pretty serious problems for the world in general. Then there’s North Korea, who seems like no matter what it does it won’t get the attention it wants.

I hate to be a videogame shill, but this is beyond awesome. I can’t wait to use this thing in multiplayer.

I’ve Found More Music to Love

BJ | 7:34 pm

I picked up Buckethead’s latest CD about 4 months ago or so. I started raving about it at work, which led a friend of mine to find out that Buckethead was playing here in Dallas. We bought tickets and had a blast at the show. The highlight (for me) was actually his opening act, Kid Beyond. I suggest checking Kid Beyond out. He does some amazing stuff with live looping and beatboxing. Anyway, back to Buckethead, On his latest CD “Enter the Chicken” there’s a track called Coma. Coma features a ethereal alto singing over Buckethead’s guitar. I looked up this woman, and discovered Azam Ali. I picked up three of her CDs and have been enthralled ever since. I still need to pick up her latest CD but have been thoroughly enjoying her latest collaborative project, Niyaz. If you had to put it in a genre, I’d put it somewhere between Persian world music and new age, sort of a sad Arabic Loreena McKennit. Give the first track of Niyaz a listen.

Niyaz: Ghazal

I Love Music

BJ | 7:09 pm

Lately I’ve been retagging my mp3 files using tag&rename. Combine this with finding a “diamond in the rough” of music procurement, and I’ve been busy enjoying some new stuff that came out. The first two that pop in my mind are Jurassic 5’s new album which is missing alot of the energy that was present in their previous albums, and Cut Chemist’s solo venture, which explains where all the energy went (Cut Chemist left J5 last year). If you’re not into hip-hop, then you won’t know what I’m talking about, but that’s okay because I have a suggestion for the rock guys. You may want to check out Comets on Fire’s latest CD “Avatar”. It has an upbeat 70’s rock vibe to it, with a lot more complexity and a lot less production than your typical rock band. Here’s some samples from each album.

Red Hot: from Jurassic 5’s new album. (My current favorite track)

The Garden: from cut chemist’s solo album.

Dogwood Rust: from Comets on Fires’ Avatar.

Political Timestamp (more fear)

BJ | 2:48 pm

I’m just doing this for future reference, since I refine my political opinion quite often, I thought it prudent to capture some thoughts on current happenings in the world. Also this might help my fan (Hi Mom) understand when I am being sarcastic. I’m sort of a moderate libertarian in my overall political view. I enjoy living in a free society, and I truly love America. I like being able to speak out/protest/support whoever I wish without facing imprisonment or death. I acknowledge the sacrifice of our troops. Those who are against our current conflict still fight because they made a commitment, and those who die, I honor, no matter the cause, because I feel they made a commitment to their view of America. If they are used inappropriately then that falls on the heads of those who know the whole picture and order them into battle.

That being said, I believe Iraq, specifically, to be an ill-advised war. My current understanding is that we invaded in order to secure a stable foothold in the middle-east from which we could reach out and stabilize the rest of the region. I honestly think our hubris got the better of us when the Gov’t decided we could reform zealous minds of their zealotry. I disagree with the way the war started. We should have waited for international consensus. The decision to invade has caused people around the world to denigrate America. I’m not sure what we should do about the current situation because I do not understand the middle-east. I don’t know if we should stay the course, or cut and run. I have cousins who are frequently deployed and in the line of fire, and I wish them home. I know 10s of thousands of Iraqi civilians have died due to sectarian violence, and I don’t know where that would lead were we to leave. I can preach all day about what we should have done, but I can’t tell you what we should do.

We need to separate ourselves from all of our interests in that region. If they wish to kill each other over dogma, then let the region fall. Our ancestors left their places of birth over dogma, and current generations can too if they wish to avoid persecution and violence. That being said, I think we should allow more immigrants into the US legally. We need to streamline and provide a program for them to come here and build up our workforce. We need to do our best to document the illegal immigrants currently here, and we need to be realistic about doing this. We have an economic struggle against the rest of the world, and the ability to keep more factories and labor here, rather than shipping them overseas, can be accomplished through a larger competitive legal workforce. America’s strength is in our ingenuity and vision, and while globalization can provide a temporary buoy to the purchasing power of our middle to low wage workers, the bottom will eventually fall out. Yes manual labor forces will be hit hard by a larger manual workforce, but in the end it will help maintain America.

Global warming is a buzzword engineered to strike fear into people. The only problem is that, as a recent washington post article pointed out, global warming is not a social problem but an engineering problem. I feel we have made it a social problem because we cannot solidly explain the engineering problem. When man starts playing God by adding, changing, removing, or trying to fix long term problems we have caused, without knowing the exact facts as to how this came about, then we may just make things worse by trying to fix the issue, especially at the expense of national economies and human lives. The answer to the energy issue is nuclear power, but most people are prejudiced due to the typical sensationalism of the time.

I abhor political punditry. I hate industries that try to legislate their business models through lobbying and legal pressure. We need copyright reform, patent reform, and a government that follows the constitution. We need conservatives to actually be fiscally conservative. Our two party mentality is flawed. I think most conspiracy theories divert attention from things that are actually important. The family is the best way to perpetuate morality; legislating it is the wrong choice.

I had some thoughts on race, religion, and the media but decided this post was already pretty long.

The Hot Seat

BJ | 1:56 pm
Crazy Weather

I’m not sure that I believe this screen print of my weather widget, but I had to post it. Life has been pretty typical on the homefront, and without turning on the news, going outside, or looking at your electricity bill you might think everything was normal. Sophia smiles, laughs, coos, and generally tracks anything she’s interested in until the object of her interest is out of sight.

Work is great, but to be honest, I probably won’t be writing much about it because blogging and work, generally, do not mix. I will say that I enjoy not getting 80 phonecalls a day. Everything is just peachy at home, provided my house doesn’t cave in due to the water restrictions in place. Jennifer(Heather’s oldest sister) is in town so I’m spending some time with her and her kids, while planning for a final at the end of this month.

I’ve already signed up for classes next semester, and to be honest I’m a little intimidated by my discrete math course. We’ll see how that works out.
